Chandra Maya Magarati, 40, mother of three siblings, one daughter and two sons, having less than one acre land with small hut made of straw and bamboo fence, is permanent resident of Khudunabari 6 Jhoda Tole. She had joined in Tribeni Mahila Samuha that was formed in 2064 Ashad 25 B.S in the initiation of Abhiyan Nepal. She was normal and living with her family sharing sorrow and happiness. But after the death of her young son at the age of 16 by poisonous snake bite, she was badly hurt by the unexpected incident in her life. She could not bear the fallen sky on her head. She was caught up by depression, stress and worry. Gradually psychosomatic syndromes, such as less apatite, weight loss, hyper acidity and other many physical complications appeared on her.
Although she had difficulties and hazardous situations she hardly shared with other members of the group because she had thought that if everybody knew her problem they would force her to get the reliable treatment for disease and it needs huge expense and she had no money. Ultimately she would have to sell that 1 acre land and there would be no land to leave her living son. Thinking that, she hid her problems and started simple treatments for gastritis, hyper-acidity and abdominal pains. But the problem did not cool down but increased and she was taken to Mechi Zonal hospital Bhadrapur for ultrasonography (USG). Doctor reported that she had chronic small intestines contraction because of that any food she ate did not pass well.
Members of Tribeni Mahila Samuha (Women Group) found that Chandra Maya was in critical condition due to the small intestine contraction. They immediately called for the meeting and gathered ideas about what the members of the group could do for her treatment. Everybody agreed for fundraising for her treatment. The initiation was aroused by themselves and the amount was 23 hundreds rupees was collected within one hour. Everybody felt that it was their responsibility to support on Chandra Maya’s treatment. Although all members of Trebini Women Group were not in the condition of paying 100 rupees for the sake of others in normal state but a member of group has relationship of heart and mind. In the first meeting after collecting fund from the individual members they decided to run a campaign of fundraising to cure Chandra Maya. They knock the door of VDC, Community Forest User Committee, Individual and vendors of Aaitabare Bazaar from where they could collect Rs 12000/-
During the fundraising campaign they had some unforgettable incidents they want to recall. President of Tribeni Women Group Puspa Baral narrates the story “Once when we were heading ahead for fundraising, we encountered with the drunkards playing cards. When we approached near them, they asked why we were moving in group. Our friends gave brief information to them about our mission. One of the drunkards stated that if their 10 rupees can save other’s life than they would not fall behind sacrificing that small amount. Everybody donated 10 rupees. We were so happy at the moment that increased our mission for more donation collection.”
They requested for other women groups who have been contributing collecting small scale donation. VDC donated 1500. After collecting that much money she was taken to Nobel Hospital Biratnagar for further treatment. Nobel hospital diagnosed her problem and referred for Bharatpur Cancer Hospital but the collected money was not enough for the expenses of Bharatpur Hospital. She was again taken back to home.
Tribeni Women Group has not stopped the mission. They have appealed for many other organizations for her cure and give her a new life. Dhruba Subba Adhikari, member of Tribeni Women group states. “ We want to teach other what we have learned from the Adharshila Talim and want to establish the culture of sharing and caring for our future generation.” If the test report explains about her living chances they won’t say day and night for collecting more money. Chandra Maya had been taken to Darjeeling as per her relative’s advice and now she has been returned to B.P Memorial, Cancer Hospital Bharatpur. Diagnosis is going on. Doctor has reported that she needs operation. According to her son, it takes more than 7 days for results of all reports and operation will be after Dashain festival. We hope that reports will not be so cruel for her and Tribeni and other women groups wil make a mega decision for running the mission for curing Chandra Maya.
